In 7th hour today, we got into a discussion of how slavery could be validated with truth tests, especially the pragmatic theory. Because it was useful and valuable to a people, the knowledge claim that 'it is right to enslave others' was accepted as a properly justified true belief for sometime. This led to the discussion about slavery today, and why most cultures disagree and see this claim would be seen as untrue, even though enslaving others could still be argued to be a pragmatic practice.
For a shocking look about slavery in the 21st century, take a look at this National Geographic site. I will try to find the actual magazine (it's buried somewhere in my house), but in the meantime, this gives a pretty grim picture of the enlightened world in which we live.
